6 • NOTES AND COMMENTS. 18l GtJHCOS.I There will bo no racing in tho Dominion for tha next two weeks, and interest will now. ccntre on tho National Steeplechase and Hurdles, As the result of their efforts at Trentham, Dorando and Tho Spaniard, who escaped penalties, aro now tha favoiftite selections for tho Steeplechase, with. Ngatiruanui and Ooronotted as first picks in the Hurdles. During tho week .past, A. Gordon schooled North East over the battens at Trentham, and the chestnut gave a capital display of fencing. It rather looks as if 10 is to bo a sure starter-in the National "Hurdles, but ho may also run in the Winter Cup on the opening day. Horses booked to leave for Riccarton this week include .Gnome and Daylight Bill, in. charge of W. Clarke; Denise Orine, Dorando, North East, and Phroso in A. Hall's care; G. Jones will take Cally Bridgo mid Field Force. The latter ■joined his stable at tho conclusion of the i first day's racing at Trentham, and will 'in future bo trained by Jones. The purchase of Kilrain was comploted ;on Saturday, and the bay horse now goes .'into J. W. lajwo's stables. His new owner / is Mr. Erio Riddiford, and the price paid 1 is said to bo 500 guineas. ■' T. N. Jones, who dislocated his shoulder i "when Cally Bridgo fell with him. inj the Final Hurdles, 'anticipates being able to toko his seat on tho big Sabretache gelding in the National Hurdles in tiireo woeks' time. Thoso who were near the fenoe where the Gisborne horse came down stato that ho was pulling double at the time, and, as he was so close to the leaders, tho chances of the race augured well for him had ho stood up. This view of things will, no doubt, keep him well in tho market for the National Hurdle race, but it is regrettable that ho did Sot get a race hero, for ho is a very lazy \vorker, and will not gallop on tho tracka. Proof of this was furnislied on Friday last, wheri Hautere beat him by half a furlong in a gallop over half a mile. During tho Wellington meeting, the ' •Napier-trained Loch Mabenl came iti for ' b great deal of support for the National Hurdles. This is hard to follow. Tho bay gelding certainly finished tip at a great rate in the Parliamentary Handicap, but thero were no hurdles' in tho way. J. M'Lauchlin intended to race him in the Final Hurdles, but tho opportunity to publicly school him was passed over when the track got heavy. So far tho eon of San Fran has raced twice over fences. When he finished second to Cally Bridgo at Gisborne, he showed a glimpse of form, but it is expecting a great deal for him to improve enough to win a National Hurdle race. In his two public elForU he has had easy field 3 to contend with, thus ensuring him a good sight at his forices, and plenty of time to jump them. A National Hurdle raco is a very diiferent thing, for the fences are very ■. formidable, and tho first half-mile over three jump 3 is run in tho region of 50 seconds.' The field is' a very crowded one for this part of the race, so that it will. bo seen that a novice has all the worst of matters. So,'if Loch Maben can win, his prospects of turning out a "topnotcher" will be good. The Manawatu Hunt Club Steeplechase meoting will bo held on the Awapuni.racecourse on Wednesday, August 0. ; Horses that win the open sprint event ; on the first day of tho Wellington Winter meeting are usually very hard to beat in the same event on the next day. This year Kaniki won the double. Mount Victoria did tho samo thing last year. Electrakoff was first aud second. St. Bill won each day, and Jolly Friar won two out of three, and was runner-up on tlie opening day.
