DEFENCE ACT OBLIGATIONS.

EMPLOYEES' LIABILITY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wanganui, July 21. The Magistrate to-day heard, a case in which Arthur Winstone, chemist, was charged -under the Defence Act with preventing an 'employee from attending casual camp. It was shown that Winstone had only ione assistant, and at tho time of the camp was unablo to pet relieving assistance, and as business do-, mantled the attention of two ho declined to give permission for his assistant to go. Winstone was not antagonistic to military training, and on other occasions had given all assistance to his employee so that ho could attend parades. In. summing up, his Worship said he must hold that a breach of tho Act had been committed, and defendant was liable to a'fine. There was no doubt the territorial movement entailed a certain amount of hardship on, employers, but at tho same time the requirements of tho country wore paramount. Employers could apply to the magistrate for exemption if there was any undue hardship. A. fine of one pound and coats was imposed.
