Ono doctor at Newcastlo used it on 300 vaccinees, but tlioy must now aU be revaccinated. ORIGIN STILL DEBATED. NEW ZEALAND SUSPECTED, Sydney, July 19. Tho health authorities of Sydney havo been compelled to recast their belief that tho smallpox was introduced by a steward aboard tho Vancouver steamer, this steward has been successfully vaccinated, showing that tho eruption from which ho'suffered was not smallpox. Somo of tho doctors beliovo tho'disease camo direct from New Zealand. They are convinced that tho Now Zealand, Sydney, and Canadian outbreaks aro all of tho same type, and that, it is extremoly likely the diseaso camo to Sydney froni Now Zealand after tho Maoris lmd been infected with tho Canadian virus. ■ ... Since tho contagion first became , known, 288 cases of smallpox have been treated, of which 55 patients and 104 convalescents arc still in quarantine, and 09 liavo. been discharged. Mr. Holman, tho State Premier, states that tho Compulsory Vaccination Bill to 1)0 introduced will apply to infants only, Tho Malieno's passengers and crew wero examined and thoso who had not been successfully vaccinated wero vaccinated before release.
