RAND STRIKERS.
CRISIS NOT YET OYER.
MINERS DEMANDS. "IMPRACTICABLE AND RUINOUS." By Ttlesrirh—Press Association—Cod jrislit (Sydney "Suil" Special.) Johannesburg, July 18. The Band strikers' demands have been presented to the Government. They includo the right of free speech, and public assembly, a national eight-hour day, a consolidated system of wages, and an immediate special session of Parliament to consider the demands. • It is understood the Government is not prepared to concede all the railwaymen's demands. Tho Government has completed plans for dealing with the strike, inclnding the segregation of a quarter of a million uatives. (Rec. July 20, 5.5 p.m.) Johannesburg, July 19. Tho mojority of opinions is hopeful that a compromise will be arrived at in connection with tlie Federation Trades Unions' demands, but the emploj'ers regard tho miners' demands as wholly impracticable and ruinous. It- is believed that if the' Government is able to satisfy the railwaymen the millers will hesitate to strike provided tlmt their demands are considered! by the lutely announced Commission of Inquiry. If, however, the railwaymen and the miners reject this method of'settling tho trouble, they may demand immediate satisfaction of their claims, and the Government then must face a calamitous general strike, and other troubles.
