i CHARGE AGAINST AN EX-CON- < STABLE. i By Telegraph—Frees Association—Copyright Sydney, July 19. In the case against ex-Constable Calwell, charged with shooting with intent to murder, the Chief Justice said the case did not come within the section which indicated that a weapon must be aimed at another person. The evidence showed that the revolver had not been pointed at another. , c The jury, by direction, returned a verdict of not guilty. : This case was the sequel to a squabble which occurred at the Sydney police barracks on June 10 last. A constable, allegedly drunk, refused to leave, and the refusal was followed by the firing of two revolver shots. As the result of the affair, Constable Calwell was summarily dismissed from the force, and arrested en a charge of shooting with intent to murder another constable. The latter was not injured. Another member of the force was, suspended on a charge of drunkenness.
