THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. CONCLUDING DAY AT TRENTHAM. D3i Qlbhuob.l At Trentham to-day, tlio Wellington Racing Club'a meeting will Ik> brought to a close, and, .13 on the opening day, the fields in tlie majority of f he events Mill be of good si/.e. Several horses that did not rac« on Wednesday will bo among tho competitors in different events, and this should add interest to the sport. Special railway arrangements aro announced, and trains for the racecourso will depart from lo Aro at 10.28 a.m. and 10.48 a.m. From Lambton Station tlio time of departure will bo 10.23 a.m., 10.45 a.m., 11.5 a.m., 12.10 p.m.,, and 1.10 p.m. Tho going will beontho heavy side today, but this is only to be expected at tills time of the year.- The first race is the Onslow Handicap, six furlongs. Tho placegetters in Wednesday's race t-.ro again engaged, and as the winutei (Kaniki) and runner-up (Gnome) finished so far ahead of tho others, they are likely to cam- the bulk of the public investments. Fresh blood—Crown Pearl—is engaged, with list, alb. This is tire top weight. In the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, Tim Doolan has been raised lGlb. for his win on Wednesday, but tho other placegetters have dropped out, so that the Canterbury owner, Mr. G. L. Stead, may 1:6 able to annex another stako with the chestnut gelding. Heather, Braebuirn, Commotion, and Waitoto are all being talked of in connection with the Crofton Handicap. There is only 41b. between tho quartet, bat as the last-named is a fresh horse, he may carry most money on tho machine. Nedra and The Spaniard have dropped out of tho July Steeplechase, 2-J links. The lesser distance should suit Tiio Native, who is improving with every-race. Haskayne registered a very attractive performance yesterday morning, when he _ got to the end of six furlongs in. lmin. 22sec. This may cause him to start a hotter favourite than. Kilrain in the Winter Oats Handicap to-day. The issue in the Final Hurdles is likely to bo a source of trouble to backers, for several fresli horses are engaged. Ooronetted, 51b., is very well handicapped, and, being such a good "mud liorse," ho may be too fast between the jumps for the others. Supporters of Watchchain contend that the best has not yet been seen of the Cuirassier gelding. Kew's form has been so consistent of late that backers are likely to have the chestnut son of Sylvia Park on their sido in tho concluding event. It was reported yesterday that The Rover was in a bad way after his fall in tho Winter Hurdles, and there was little chance of him being able to ran in tho Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton next month. Mr. W. C. Bine is taking Domino back to Auckland on Monday, and neither he nor Potoa will race at Riccarton. Adelicia was sent liomo to Awapnni after the first day's racing at Trentham, and as Nyland finished his carcer in the Winter Hurdles, G. Price will have nothing racing at tho meeting to-day. The Highdeu stable will not be-' represented at the C.J.C. meeting next month for, with the exception of Bronze and Ermengarde, the wliolo of tho team aro two-year-olds and yearlings. The programme for tho Marton. Jockey Club's spring meeting is advertised. Tho fixturo is to be held on tho club's course, adjoining Marton Junction railway station, on September 3. Tho course and -appointments have been greatly improved in recent years, and, as tho property is so well situated, the club expects big attendances of tho public at all its meetings. For many years past owners have lately patronised the spring fixture, and this year should be no exception to the rule. Nominations for all events close on August 15, with tho secretary, Mr. Arthur Way.
