PAYMENT OF TEACHERS.
PROFESSION UNATTRACTIVE, i At the Now Zealand Farmers' tlnfon Conference last night, Major Lusk {Auckland), in moving that (ho attention of tho Government and education boards bo drawn to the neglect of tho back-block schools, said that in many cases the hackblock schools wero uot receiving the attention I hey needed. There seemed a remissness on the part of tho education boards, which were inclined to pay mora attention to the larger schools, which did not need much looking after. Mr. G. Anderson thought there should 1)0 some system of minimum payment for aided teachers, who were at present paid on capitation. Mr, T. Moss thought tlie question of pavmcnt of tcachcrs both in large and small schools was one that wanted serious consideration. The men to whom they wero entrusting their children wero in a position little better than laliourers. It seemed to him they should ask the Government for an incrensc of the wages of the teachers, so as to make the profession attractive to qualified young men. At present teachers were leaving (he profession on the firs! opportunity. Tho remit was carried.
