WAS AID JUSTIFIED ? At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Hospital ami Charitable Aid Board, Mr. J. W. M'Ewan said that lie liad recently read a statement, in the newspapers that a. woman who owne<l a house valued at JJGOO had received charitable aid from the board. Ho wished to ltnow if this was correct, . Mr. W. Galloway said that lie was ibsponsible for the statement, which lie had made at a mooting of tho Local Bodies' Association.. Ho could not remember th« exact details of the case, which he thought had taken' placo about three years ago. The chairman (tho Kev. W. A. Evans) 6aid that if tho facts were as_ stated, tho case merited the serious consideration of the board. Personally he had no recollection of any such case, although ho had been concerned in tho distribution of charitablo aid in Wellington for tho past eighteen years, There was one instaiico in which 'a woman with several children who owned a small house hud applied for aid. Thp board had thought it v.-iso to pav tie interest on her mortgage by way of'rent, so as to secure tho house for her. If this wero the case referred to, he could sav that tho action of tho board was perfectly justifiable. Mr. Truebridgo could not remember such a case n* that to which Mr. Galloway preferred. Mr. M'Ewan thought that the matter was ono which the Charitablo, Aid Committoo might bo asked to inqmro into. Mr. ,T.
