The Hon. W. H. Herries characterised as impracticable a proposal made by Mr. Bradney in the House of Representatives yesterday that the Government should provide houses for the whole of the railway men employed about stations. It would be equally inadvisable, the Minister added, to give preference in respect to Government houses to one section of tho railway employees. Commissioner D. Lamb, Foreign and Immigration Secretary of the Salvation Army, from London, will deliver a special address on "World-Wide Social and Immigration Operations," at the Citadel. Vivian Street, at 8 o'clock this evening. Mr. Alfred Linley, who returned from Sydney yesterday, has arranged for the appearance in New Zealand of Mr. Stanley M'Kay's Pantdmime Company, which produces pantomimo at popular prices. The tour will probably commence in Wellington in October. Later on Mr. Linley intends to establish a film-hiring business in New Zealand, and arrangements to that end are now in progress. The picture business in Australia, ho says, seems to have taken a now lease of life, and ■ everywhere the theatres aro being well patronised. The engagement was broken through a severe cold.
