MACHINERY INSPECTION.

DEPARTMENT'S ANNUAL REPORT. The report of the Inspector of Machinery Department was presented to Parliament yesterday. It states that the practice now adopted of submitting plans of machinery and boilers before erection "has done much to secure uniformity throughout the Dominion. It nrevented alteration after the work had been commenced For the year 7011 boilers had been inspected. Tlio fees received amounted to £7969. The defects discovered totalled 1239, of which 33 were very dangerous. Now boilers to the number of 587 had been registered in tho year, their horse-power being G649. Auckland easily heads the list for the installation of new boilers, her contribution to the total of 6G1I) horse-power being 229 H. Auckland South is next with 855, and Taranalci third with 712; Wellington and Wellington North combined total B18; Canterbury, and Canterbury South, 400; and Otago, 211 horse-power. No lioiler explosion occurred in tho Dominion during tho year. There/had been a number of accidents with other machinery, notably with lifts. An important section of the work was the snrvev of steamers. Altogether 7.11 -surveys were made, and foes received amounting to ,£3SOB. The total revenue of the Department was ,£14,082, and the expenditure ,£13,545 18s. Bd.
