PEARCE'S PROSPECTS IMPROVING. (Rec. July 16, 10.40 p.m.) London, July 16. The "Sportsman" declares that the feeling in rowing ciroles is that Barry will have to scull very hard to retain his title. Pearco's singular improvement has surprised excellent judges of form. Besides his fine power he has recently lengthened his stroke in a mauner which finds favoiir with his severest critics. Barry was recently unwell, <tnd had to take two days' holiday. Ho has now recovered. The race for the world's sculling championship takes placo on Monday next, July 21, at 3.30 p.m., between Ernest Barry, of Wandsworth, champion of the world and champion of England, and Harry Pearce, of Australia. The honours also include the English sculling championship, "Tho Sportsman" Cnallengo Cup, and a prize of one thousand pounds Tho race is to te rowed under 11,e laws of the world's and English championships, over a straight-away oourso lrom Putney Bridge to the Ship at Mortlake, a distance of four miles and a quarter.
