LIGHTKEEPER'S STATEMENT. The complaiDt mado by Captain A. Fisk, of tlio coastal steamer Aorere, regarding signals which lie made to Stephens Island, when his vessel was disabled 111 Cook Strait 011 Sunday last, has been inquired into by tho Marino Department. 111 reply to a communication from the Department tho lightkeepers stato that they saw a small vessel under tail on tho day ill question, but she was too far off to bo distinguished. Tho three men in charge wero at the flagstaff nt the time, and they stato that they did not observe any signals of distress. One of tlio men w*as a sailor off tho Government steamer Hinemoa. He is relieving assistantkeeper at tho island at' present. The men add that they saw and communicated with several steamers which passed Stephens Island during the day on which the Aorero was in tho vicinity.
