London, July 14. Madame Melba appeared in the opera "Rigoletto" at C'ovent Garden. Sho re-' ceivecl in ovation. BURNS A CHURCH FOR A LARK. London, July 14. William Ross lias confessed to having set fire to the Salem Chapel; also to robberies from other churches. He says lio committed the crimes for a lark. He intended to rob and burn tho principal churches on the Welsh coast. Tho crimes were at first thought to bo tho work of Suffragettes. SHIPYARD WAGES. London, July 14. The shipyard workers' ballot was largely in favour of acceptance of the masters' terms—an increase of a shilling per week and 2$ per cent, for riveters (as against the general advance of 5 per cent, demanded), and also tho institution of a neutral chairman.
AMERICAN RAILWAY DISPUTE. (Sydney "Sun" Special.) New York, July 14. A conference of forty-five companies in the United States is considering a threatened strike by 100,000 railway men. PELLAGRA IN SCOTLAND. (Sydney "Sun" Special.) London, July 14. A number of cases of pellagra have been reported in. Scotland, and two children arc dead from the disease. [Pellagra has only been reported in Great Britain during the last year or two. It has been most prevalent in Italy, and is essentially chronic in character, the sufferer presenting a curious mummified appearance. It is communicated by sandflies.] FRENCH CELEBRATION. Sydney, July 15. French residents yesterday celebrated France's national day (the anniversary of the fall of the Bastille). Three hundred persons of various nationalities attended a reception held by the Acting-Consul-General, M. Peron. , PRINCE KATSURA ILL. Tokio, July 15. Prince Katsura is suffering from cancer and is in a critical condition. GERMAN WORKERS ON STRIKE. Berlin, July 15. Workmen at the Vulkan Yards, at Hamburg, and some at Blohmvoss Yards, have struck for an increase in wages. TWO AVIATORS DEAD. Paris, July 15. A father and son named Bertin fell wliile flying in a monoplane at Versailles. Both were killed and their bodies burned in the wreckage. FRANCE'S COLOURED TROOPS. Paris, July 15.
