HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

' 9 The ordinary meoting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last ovening. The following were present: The Mayor (Mr. E. P.' 1 Bunny), and Councillors Hobte,, Ball, Phypers, Parsonage, Clendon, Keinpthorne, Meldrum, Hodgkins, and Dilwson. , A letter wa3 received from the Horowhenua County Council forwarding copies of resolutions passed by that council on May 10i to the effect: "That the present system of election for representation upon hospital and harbour boards is unjust, wasteful, and detrimental to the best interests of country districts, and largely responsible for the ever-increasing levies mado by some 'hospital boards upon their contributory bodies, etc." Commenting upon this, the Mayor saiil that ho agreed with the part dealing with the Hospital and Ch'aritablo'Aid. Board. Ho considered that' Wellington had a great deal better representation upon the board than the remainder of the smaller contributing bodies had. Moreover, tho expenditure of tho money more vitally affected the smaller Wellington, which could better stand the expense. The representative for Horowhenua had made some strong remarks, but tho .Wellington representatives did not appear to uphold his viow. iA letter was received from-Messrs. Alder and Mackay referring to a newspaper report of last meeting, wherein the Hamilton Borough stated that the automatic system of lighting was not wol'king satisfactory. This is easily explained, as they work; tank pressure only. Tho company »is quite prepared to take any representative of the council to any of the North Island towns to see their system working, at their expense, subject to their tender being accepted.—Received. The Borough Solicitor wrote re drainage at Te ilomi, and reported having written to the company's solicitors on July 2, stating that the council would proceed for execution for the amount, and advising that the council would complete tho scheme of drainage and collect the sum of JEBOO from the company when finished. Mr Harper; tho secretary of tho company, had sinto seen the solicitors, and .stated that the company would be in a position to pay the amount of tho costs, and tho borough for the work already done about tlie end of tho present month.—The letter was received.
