(By Telegraph—Press Association.) * FOXTON'S FREQUENT FIRES. ; NO PLANT TO FIGHT THEM. Foxton, July 11. Two houses in Ravensworth. Place were totally destroyed by fire last night. The fire'originated through the.-upsetting of a . kerosene 1 lamp in the bedroom of a liveroomed house occupied by V. Walsh, and owned by Geo. Barber.. The flames, quickly spread, and the whole of the contents were destroyed. The flames spread to an adjoining sefren-roomed house occupied by Alex. Boss, and owned by, A. K. Spiers, Some' of the effects were saved. The easterly wind saved an adjoining house and , Masonic Hall. The town does-not posI eess a water supply or fire-fighting appliances, otherwise the fire would have been, confined to one house. Insurances:— BarberV house, .£250 in the State; effects, £75 in the United. Spier's house, iliOO in the-State; effects,. <£250 in the Union. 1 ■ ' 1 " FOXTON SHOP RIFLED. / . Foxton, July 11. The business premises of Baucham and \ Charles, grocers, were broken into either on" Saturday or last night, and a quantity of-tobacco was stolen. A desk was broken open and the' drawers rifled, but Satur- / day' 3 takings had been removed by the owners on Saturday, night, DISAPPEARED. Hamilton, July 14. Eobert Paxton, aged. 50, a labourer, left a Hainilton boardinghouse during Saturday night, and has not since been teard of..' His coat was found on the Waikato Eiver bank yesterday, but the police have dragged without' result. RAILWAY OFFICER VANISHES. Westport, Julv 14. Mr._ J. Croft, railway stationmaster at Granity, left there -without leave on Saturday morning. He left the train at Westport, and has not since been seen. Inquiries throughout the district fail to locate him. He has been mentally depressed lately. He came from Canterbury a few months ago. His books and tash aro in perfect order. ■ THE LICENSING ISSUE. ' Napier, July 11. A public meeting held this evening, and by Mr. H. D. Bedford and the Eev. J. Dawson, organising secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, ip.rried the following resolution:—"That this meeting of Napier electors ,-entys its emphatic pro- / test against the three-fifths handicap'on the people's vote in the licensing issue, • and pledges itself to procure justice for the people."
