AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY.

ENTHUSIASTICALLY TAKEN UP. Tliero was a full attendance of the committee of the newly-formed Wellington Amateur Operatic Socicty at a meeting presided over by Mr. A. E. Mabin last evening. It was announced that tho Hon. A. L. Herdinan, M.P., had signified his acceptance of the position of president, which announcement was enthusiastically received. The vice-prcsidents clccted were: Messrs. A. E. Mabin, T. W'iiford, M.P., I'. Levi, and H. E. Nicholls, those officers being giy.cn the right to participate in.the deliberations of the committee. A draft copy of tho society's rules was submitted by Messrs. Levi, Kelly, and Meredith, and after 6ome slight amendments had been made, the rules were ordered to bo typed and brought forward for confirmation at tho next committeo meeting. The provision regarding active members is that they shall each pay an annual feo of 55., in return for which they are to receive two tickets for each of tho society's productions. A limited number of ■ honorary members will be admitted. Their annual subscription will bo £1 Is., for whicli they will obtain four dress circle or front-stall tickets for two of tho society's productions. It was announced that certain dates in October had been "pencilled" for tho Opera House, and that rehearsals would commence next week. The musical director, Mr. D. A. Kenny, has been appointed to test tho voices of applicants before they are submitted for acceptance to tho committee. Lists of applicants wero handed in by several of the mcm7>ers of the committee. The secretary was instructed to write to Dunedin for scores _of "The GeisW and as many as possiblo are to be obtained locally ; by members of the coinmittoe. A casting committee was set up, and will commence tho work of arranging tho cast as soon after Clio first rehearsal as possible.
