ARBOR DAY.
ARRANGEMENTS FOR TO-MORROW. A veritable forest of trees is to bo planted in various parts of tlio city tomorrow in honour ol' tho hitherto muchneglected Arbor Dm*. Elaborate preparations have been niudo by working bees in connection with some of tho State schools and suburban jjiunicipal societies, which are being supplied with tho right kind of trees and shrubs by Mr. Glen (superintendent of reserves). His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) intends to devote tho day entirely to visiting tlio several suburban schoofgrounds at stated hours (already published), and presiding at the official gathering at Section 48 of tho Town Belt (Ivclburue) at 2.30 p.m. Ho will impress on all concerned) the necessity for giving proper attention to the trees planted whilst in tho nursery stage, in order that everything may be given a fair chanco to flourish. On Saturday afternoon about 1G willing men gathered to assist tlio headmaster (Mi'. C. N. lijaslain), members of tho School Committee, and tho older boye, in' planting tho Island Bay School grounds. A very kocn spirit pervaded all presont. Tho boys of tho 6chool had already done jv good deal of work in getting tho ground prepared, and . the principal efforts on Saturday wore directed to tho completion of this work, and the erection of neat but strong protecting fence?, in readiness for tho planting. About. 150 shrubs were planted on Saturday, and 300 more will bo put in to-morrow. The work lias .been planned out in a systematic mandcr, tho object being to complete last year's 6cheme, aud also a further instalment of tho planting. The proposals havo been approved by Mr. Glen, the superintendent of reserves, and tho shrubs and trefcs aro bdilnsrf uuppliod by tlio City Corporation. Tlio Mayor is to be asked to plant a commemorative tree when 110 visits tlio school, about 3 p.m. to-morrow. The Beautifying Committeo of tho Island Bay Municipal Association i 6 co-operating with tho School Committee in this work, and is also promoting a scheme for tho planting of the zig-zag at Cam Street, off Eden Street.. A' big effort has boon made to boautify the grounds of tho Newtown Infant School, Ennnott Street, and tho chairman of the School Committee, Mr. J. Cnstle, the headmaster Mr. Parkinson, and several contingents of senior scholars havo recently been working to this end. Mr. Glen, superintendent of city resorves, has expressed approval of their work, and has promised to send along a collection of native shrubs, which have been selected so as to be of educational value. To-mor-row (Arbor Day) the Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, is to be at tile school at 2 p.m., and will plant a pohutukawa on tho Riddiford Street frontago of tho main pla>ground, as a comw'omorativo treo.
