At Varan, Haapai, <iml Nukualofa the ground rocked violently for two minutes. Tho natives were panic-stricken, calling on their gods for aid. -The concrcto resorvair at Haapai, containing the natives' water Gupply, was cracked from top to bottom, and the wator ran to waste. Otlierwiso the damage was trifling, but the beach at Haapai was covered to a depth of two foet with t{rey pumice, and on other beaches a similar deposit was left by the sea some days later.
