THE TURF.

1 NOTES AND COMMENTS. TIMES ON TRENTHAM TRACKS, IBr Qlencoi.l There will Lo a small race meeting at liangiora in tho South Island to-day. This afternoon the Victoria Racing Club's Grand Xatiodnl meeting: will bo concluded at Flemington. Tho principal event to bo decided is tlio Grand National Steeplechase, for which a good field promises to go to tho post. Tlio four Southland horses engaged at tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting arrived in Wellington yesterday, and wore railed to Trentham in tho afternoon. The two Auckland candidates, Watclichain and Tamainupo, also reached headquarters yesterday. Inuner has progressed tho right way during tlio past couple of months, and her three-year-old career promises to be a succcssful one. Merry Guy, Lady Vladimir, and the Sir Laddo—Betsy youngster were schooled at the barrier at Treutham yesterday morning. As the majority of the visiting horses aro not likely to arrive beforo Monday evening, tho track work at' Trentham may not lo of much assistance .in indicating the winners of next week's races. Heavy rain had fallen at Trentham bel'oro tho gallops commenced yesterday niorning, and it was bitterly cold. The inner grass gallop and tho sand track woro available. Most of tho horses worked on tho former. Fireworks 'H. Telford) was the first horse to appear. He covered two rounds at a good solid threequarter pace, and moved freely and well. Tho .Native (M'Sweeney) and Wnitarere (Telford) wero sent out together to cover two rounds. After tho first round had been covered, The Native drew right away from the old Torpedo horse. Styx (Telford) and Porky (M. M'Donald) traversed 6ix furlongs together in limn, 22see., tho former having slightly tho best of it. Sir Knox, with a very light boy in the saddle, shaped nicely while covering a milo in lmin. 52sec. An attractive gallop was that registered by tho 'chaser Hoanga. After doing a round at an easy gait, ho ran homo from the mile disc in lmin. 53sec., and finished well—this with a good weight in the saddle. Napper Tandy, with a heavy weight, moved freely over two rounds, tho last mile being covered in lmin, sßsec. Hautere (R. Berry) also covered two Tounds. He hit out in taking style, and seemingly wanted to go faster. ' Nedra and Amber and White were on the .track. They covered a round together. Both looked well, the former especially so. George proved too good for a stable companion in a fast gallop over four furlongs. Turna finislied six lengths in front of Elevated at tho cud of a six-furlong gallop, tho time being lmin. 21 2-ssec. Tho Parliamentary Handicap candidate, Ceylon, went once round at a strong halfpace, and a similar task was performed by Commotion. Pavlova (Telford) was not fully esWded whilo covering four furlongs in SGsec. Rod Earl, who hails from Southland, has a great reputation as a hurdle horse, and his supporters give him a good chance in the Winter Hurdles, in which ho has 9st. 91b. Several times he has won in mud with over list, on hi 3 back, but northern form is much better than that in the south. Gold Bird used to win at Wingatui with 12st. and over, but ho always had the miniibum in important races in the north. Probable riders in tho Wellington Steeplechase areGlenmoro (W. Adams), Tho Nativo (H. M'Sweeney), Hautere (P. Brady), El Dorado (H. Coker), Hoanga (J.'Deerov), Tho Spaniard (A. Julian), Dorando (A. Gordon), Leolanter (11. Futcher), Waitaroro (J. Hughes), Lugeon (R. Gray),' Red M'Gregor (J. O'Connell), Nedra (W. J. Porter), Kia Ora (I 1 . Fcilding), Bismarck (E. Abbott). W. Young is to lido Aberbrothock in the Winter Hurdles, and R. Young will be on Nyland. The horses named jumped at Awapuni early this week, but performed most indifferently, and each hit liard several times. The former will probably bo found to bo tho-moro forward of the two,' for ho has dono more racing than Nyland. Two-year-olds have, in, past years, had rtil the best of matters in tho Trial, Plate at Trentham. This is not surprising, for they have a big null in tho weights compared with tho older horses, while at tho same timo they are nearly three-year-olds. The juvenile starters will this year be represented by Pavlova, Adelicia, Clmrlerose, Lyrique, I'rinco Laddo, and Sir Moseley. W. Clark, with Sunbeam, Daylight Bill, and Gnome, is expected to arrivo from Riccarton by tho Mararoa this morning.
