RUGBY MATTERS. THE CALIFORNIAN TOUR. .THOSE "DAILY EXPENSES." Tho Otago Rugby Union recently circularised tho other unions advocating that members of the New Zealand representative team to visit California should each receive Ss. per day as a travelling allowance. The Wellington Rugby Union at Wednesday's meeting decided to support the proposal subject to tho approval of the New Zealand Eugby Union. The council of tho New Zealand Union has now considered tho point raised by the Otago Union, and has decided against, tho proposal, and that only reasonable expenses will bo allowed. It may ho mentioned that; no fixed allowance was made to the members of tho Californian University team when it toured .Now Zealand, and it was cjuite against the "principles of amateurism to make any fixed allowance of the kind. The Eugby Union's weekly note states that, as the final destination of thesenior championship practically depends on this afternoon's game between Oriental and Athletic, a keen contest is anticipated at tho Park, The Oriental team have demonstrated their strength by their defeating Petono by a substantial margin, and the leaders will havo to play their best football to retain their position. Tlio second _of a .series of harrier races to maintain interest during the interval will be run in tho shape of a 'two-mile handicap race. Some forty entries have been received,' and a keen race ought to be seen. On No. 2 ground at the Park an innovation in the shape of a junior game is being played between Petone and Athletic. Both teams are leading for the junior championship, and as they have wen showing excellent form patroni should see an interesting game.
