Y.M.C.A. DEBATING CLUB.
On Tuesday evening the Y.M.C.A. Litorary 'and Debating Club held an "open night" for the occasion of an address on Shakespeare by Mr. Richard Brown, president of the club. Mr. A. Jameson presided over a crowded attendance of .members and friends. Sir. Brown delivered a particularly interesting and instructive lecture, entitled "Shreds and Patches." He showed clearly how the writings of Shakespeare had left an indelible impression on our language, and how numberless quotations from his works were on everyone's lips. Tho lecturer told some amusing stories of the experiences of amateur Shakespeareans iu Wellington in the early days.' He also regretted tho fact that a large number of peoplo to-day failed to take an adequate interest in tho plays of Shakespeare. During the evening the following rendered Shakespearean items:—Misses Marie Fix, Lulu Arnold, and J. Petrie, Messrs. K. Shorney, W. J. Mears, F. Hoole and Master Power.
