" CAT AND MOUSE."

MILITANT SUFFRAGETTES CRUSHED BY LEGISLATION.

PRACTICALLY LEADERLESS., DANGEROUS PLOT REVEALED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, July 7. The "Daily Mail" says that the militant Suffragette conspiracy, as an effective organisation, has been crushed by the "cat-and-Mouse" Act, and is now without foundation, and practically leaderless. The "Standard" asserts that it was intended by the Suffragettes to eclipse previous efforts. Women on a certain night were to sot fire to leading business centres and Government offices. Tho Suffragettes, says tho paper, consulted experts regarding the preparation and handling of supplies of most dangerous material, which were to be removed to a place to allay suspicion. It was intended to ignite simultaneously many portions of London. Thousands of phosphorus tubes and other | combustibles have been seized.

The effect of the "Cat-and-Mouse" Act, as the measure introduced for the surveillance of Suffragette conspirators is called, is, shortly, that any offender, once convicted, ia liable to be rearrested i£ to be acting in a manner calculated to arouse the suspicion of tho police authorities. GUNPOWDER EXPLOSION. UNDER LIVERPOOL EXCHANGE. London, July 7. Gunpowder placed in an iron pipe exploded in a subterranean passage at tho Liverpool Exchange. Some damage was done. William Ross has been arrested on suspicion of having set fire to tho Salem Chapel and a number of other chapels in Wales. The collection boxes wore Tobbed, and the fires started to cover up the thefts. The Southport pipr was soaked with paraffin and ignited, but tho flames were extinguished. A shelter was destroyed. Suffragette literature was found on the scene. FIRE LOSSES. ' (Sydney "Sun" Special.) (R-ec. July 8, 6.50 p.m.) London, July 8.
