THE SMALLPOX SCARE

OUTBREAK TRACED. TO A STEAMER STEWARD. By <MoKra.ph—Press A«»oolMUm-Ooj>yrlgh» Sydney, July 7. The smallpox outbreak lias been definitely traced to' the arrival on April 12 last of a. steward aboard the steamer Zealandia, from Vancouver. The man did not know that he was suffering from the disease, which was contracted probably at Vancouver. During his sojourn in Sydney he was frequently in company with a lady friend employed in a clothing: factory, and soon after the vessel's departure the lady becamo ill.

Tlioro are thirty-eight patients in the hospital at the quarantine station, but none of the cases are serious. Sixtyseven convalescent patients and "contacts" are also detained there. ' Vaccinating is proceeding apace j 9500 have been treated by the health authorities. It is estimated that sir thousand have also been vaccinated privately.

Forty-three convalescents and "contacts," and sixteen new cases have been quarantined since Saturday morning, but these, mostly, have beta suffering from the disease for some time pnst.

THIRTY-EIGHT NEW CASES. (Roc. July 8, 0.10 a.m.) Sydney, July 7. Thirty-eight cases have been taken to the quarantine Btatiou to-day. Of these, nineteen are patients—tho largest number of patients yet discovered in any siuglo day. The total number now in quarantine is 143. Fifty-seven of these are patients, and eighty-six are convalescents or "contacts." The epidemic continues to be of a mild form. Vaccination is proceeding apace. Tho lymph ran out to-day, but tho authorities say that further supplies are assured though they cannot, owing to the widespread demand for the lymph, furnish any to private medical men.
