SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Meeting of the Women's Branch of the Political Reform League. The usual monthly meeting of tho Women's Branch of tho Political Reform Leaguo was held in their room in Ballance Street on Thursday evening, Mrs. Menzies, president, being in tho chair. After routine business had been transacted, Mrs. E. Hadfield gave an acoount of tho Octavia Newman Memorial Home Fund.' She stated that £331 had already been handed over to tho Convalescent Trustees and that a small sum is still in hand. It was definitely decided to close tho list of subscribers on July 26. A very cordial vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Duncan Monzies for his services as honorary auditor to the fund. It was carried by acclamation. The sun room at the home was said to bo well on the way to completion. After reading an articlo which had appeared 6omo time back in The Dominion, and which bore out her views concerning oertain matters, Or. _ Edith- .Huntley brought forward a motion that a deputation of members of the league should wait upon tho Prime Minister to urgo that improved legislation bo introduced for tho protection of girls, and especially that of little children. Sho was entirely of tho opinion that punishment for assaults upon them should be of so severe a character that it would act as a real deterrent to tlleso criminal offenders. Another matter that came up for consideration was introduced by Mrs. M'Vicar. It concerned tho pension at present payablo to tho widows of superannuated Civil Servants. In many cases these pensions were bo small that they were quite inadequate. Mrs. M'Vicar suggested that members should consider this matter and discuss it at the next meeting. The annual meeting will lie tho next one to be held and nominations of the various officers will bo accepted during the next fortnight. Tho meeting closed with tho usual vote of thanks. Dance at the Hutt. A very enjoyable dance was given by Mrs. Rathbone, of tho Hutt, in tlio Lyceum Theatre, Loiyer Hutt,. on Thursday evening, to celebrate tho coming out of her daughter, Miss. Dorothy Rathbone, and also as a farewell to 1 Miss Muriel Rathbone, who is leaving shortly for England' to stay 'with her sister, Mrs. Chesney. The hall, had been prettily decorated with ljvSopodium, foliage, and gay coloured bunting, and one end was furnished and sot aside for non-dancers, in addition to various sitting-out rooms. Tho suppertables had been charmingly decorated with violets, frce9ias, and white and yellow jonquils and daffodils, a big. bowl of daphne eliciting much admiration. Mrs. Rathbone wore a handsomely embroidered. town trimmed with jewelled embroideries, fiss Muriel and Miss Gladys Rathbone wore pretty mauve frocks and tho debutante of the evening was in white cliarmeuse with ai panelled l overdress of real lace finished with pearl embroideries. Among those present were: Mrs. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Strauchon, Mr .and Mrs. B. Rathbone (Hawke's Bay), Mr. and Mr®. A. Warburton, Miss Arrow, Miss Wilson, Miss Warburton, Miss Parsons, Miss Hayward, Miss I. Bunny, Mis 3 Mason, Miss Welsh, Miss Natusch, Miss Kingdom, Miss Hcaton and several others.

Danes in the New Century Hall. The staff of D. Milligan» merchant tailor, held' their annual danco in' tho Now Century Hall on Thursday evening. Music was supplied by Sir. Clifford Baker, and the M.C.'s were Messrs. Forsytho, Oaig, Stephens, and Siovers, Supper was catered for by 'Mrs. Oscar Johnston to the satisfaction of all present. The chaperones were Mi's. Wyatt. Tho annual general meeting of tho Mothers' Union of All Saints, Kilbirnie, was held in the Maranui Hall on July 2. Mrs. Gibbons was; in tho chair. The meeting was the largest and most encouraging that has yet boon held. This branch of tho Mothers' Union is wowing rapidly, and is becoming quite a force in tho district, and.it is earnestly hoped that this branch may go on with its good work of fraternity—both individually and collectively. Miss Donniston is expected to arrive in Wellington to-day, on her return from a visit to Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. B. R-athbono (Hawko's Bay) are visiting Wellington. Mrs. Snow (Invercargill) is visiting Wellington. Miss Angell, of Christohurch, is staying at the Windsor Hotel. Miss Allen has come up from, tho south to join her father, the Hon. James Allen. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Adams left Wellington on Thursday on a visit to Sydney and Melbourne. A "Coon Can" tournament has been organised lately for the benefit of tho finances of tho Girl Peace Scouts, and among the hostesses have been Mrs. P. M, B. Fisher, Mrs. Crawford, and Miss Brandon. Miss Duncan will bo tho hostess for the final event, which is to bo, played very shortly. Becoming coiffures in the latest style* may bo obtained nt Mrs. liolleston's wellknown hairdressing rooms. Wellington Municipal Fire Brigade Bail. Tho thirteenth annual "social" and ball of the Wellington Municipal Firo Brigado <iud Wellington Volunteer Fire Police was held in tho Concert Chamber of tho Town Hall last evening, and was in ovcry way a most successful and enjoyable function. Tho hall was comfortably filled for dancing and had been very effectively decorated with quantities of (lags suspended from the coiling, amd with lycopodiuui and foliage wreathed around tho pillars and across the front of tho 6tagp. 1 Trails of lycopodiuui clustered over tho red shaded lights, and across tlio front of tho gallory was tho motto of tho brigado, two hands claspinp each other, with tho let•I"3, F-B. at either end. W.C.T.U. Tho monthly meeting of tlio Wellington District W.C.T.U. was hold on Thursday afternoon in Constable Streot Rooms, Mrs. Boxall presided. Mrs. Houlder gave a bright and interesting account of tlio N.Z, Alliance Conference, which was held in! Chrißtchurch, to which sho was delegate. In connection with all tho work mentioned there, Mrs. Houldor thought that our W.C.T.U. women could held considerably with the pledge-taking campaign. Two ladies were present from Petone W.C.T.U., and expressed their willingness to entertain tho District Convention during tho first week of September. Wanganui Notes. Tho Wanganui Amateur and Dramatio Society gavo f° ur excellent performances Of "The Geisha" in tho Opera House last week. They were greeted with a full, house each evening. Amongst tho audience were the Rev, J. L. Dove and Mrs. Dove, Mrs. and Miss Stevenson. Mr. and Mrs. Dunn, Mr. and Mrs. ICerr, Dr. and Mrs. Christie. The following ladies retired, but were re-elected unopposed: Meedames Braik, Bassett, Christie, Crawford, Cummins, M'Kenzie, and Miss Alexander. The first annual "social" of the Wellington I.C.S. Students' Association took place last week in tho Alexandra Hall. The students and friends spent an enjoynble time, and during the evening a flashlight photograph was taken of tho soone.
