From the accounts given by the driver of tho car, Charles Haxton, and by several bystanders, it appears that Mrs, Keiincy was crossing tho street from tho Public Trust Oliico whon hor dog ran, in front of a passing trnmcar. Her attention being attracted by this, tho apparently did r.ot notico an approaching motor until sho heard the warning toot. By this time sho was more than half-way, ncross tiio road, and (according to tho driver) sho stopped to allow tho car, which was on tlio right sido of the road, to pass in front of her—that is, between her and tho footpath. Tho drivor, seeing th's, inclined his car, which was proceeding towards Thorndou, to tho left, and. towards tho footpath. Then, without any warning, Mrs, lienney changed her mind, and attempted to reach tho footpath, crossing directly in ,front of the car. Tho driver at onco jammed on tho brakes, and, with tho wheels of tho car locked, swerved to tho right, still hoping' to avoid tho accident, which wag now almost inevitable. But tho wheels of tho car (a largo white Limousine) would not grip on the slippery blocks, and tho car skidded right round across tho road, and Mrs. Kcnney was struck by tho iroa hood-stay, the result being as indicated. After tho accident, tho car was stand-" ing across tho road, with tho bonnet slightly towards tho south. Tho tracks of tho car wero measured by tlio police; and it was found that tho back wheels had locked nineteen yards from tho spot where tho car stopped.
