ONE OF THE OLDEST PIONEERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, July 4. Last week thero passod away at 'Dainpier's Bay, West Lyttelton, 0110 of New Zcalaud'3 oldest colonists, m tho person of Mr. Richard Aug-ustus Eaton. Mr. Eaton was born at Lutley Hill, Halesowen, Birmingham, England, in tho year 1828, and caino out to New Zealand in tllre fillip Oriental, landing in Wellington in 1830. Ho served in Hie Maori wars, and, during his stay in tho North Island, put up with a great many hardships. In 1860 lie came to Lyttelton, Mid was one of tho band of workers employed in tho construction of the tunnel. He also took a prominont part in tho building of tho eastern breakwater.
