He received ail ovation on alighting at Versailles. TOn May 15 a cablegram stated that the French aviator Brindejne, who aeroplaned from Bremen, via Brussels, to Hendon, was charged at the Bow Street Police Court with failing to notify the Home Office, and with flying over a prohibited area. , The magistrate acocpted a pica of ignorance of the law, and bound over the accused. The Aero Club withdrew Brindejne's competitor's certificate. On June 18, Brindejne flew from Paris to St. Petersburg. From Paris to Warsaw he averaged nearly 100 males an liour. Christiania, July 3. The Government is awarding four thousand kroner for Amundsen's companions in his last South Polo expedition, and three thousand kroner for the rest of the crew. XEW SOUTH WALES RAILWAYS. Sydney, July 3. The Railway Commissioner has placed orders for eighty locomotives with two English firms, at a cost of over half a million. DYNAMITE EXPLOSION: FIFTY DEAD. Rio de Janeiro, July 3. A dynamite explosion occurred at a railway warehouse in Curitiba. The explosion was followed by an indescribablo panic. It is feared that fifty men have been killed. ALEXANDRA DAY. London, July 3. ' The Alexandra Day flower sales in aid of the public hospitals realised ,£18,391. BRITISH TERRITORIALS. London, July 3. Colonel Soely (Secretary of State for War), in a specc.h. at Hounslow, said that the Territorials had had the best recruiting year sinco the 6ystem was started, the increase for the past quarter being twenty per "centum abovo the figures for the previous corresponding quarter. SAILING SHIP OVERDUE. London, July 2. The ship Lucknow, 1408 tons gross, from 1 Port Victoria, South Australia, is considered to be overdue. Thirty percentuin lias been paid to reinsure her. Melbourne, July 3. General Sir lan Hamilton, InspectorGeneral of the Overseas Forces, will visit Australia and New Zealand early in 1914. 11.M.5. PHILOMEL. London, July 2. The cruiser Philomel will bo recommissioned at Singapore or Hong-Kong in October next, and proceed to New Zealand. [The cruiser Philomel was completed in 1892, at a cost of ,£163,699. The population of Victoria at the end of the last year was 1,375,931. an increase of 37,403. This is the largest increase since 1888. It includes 15,11!) State-aided immigrants.
