The question of the selection of a Chair-man-of, Committees' will/! it is undtrstood, be discussed at a meeting of. the Reform party, to-day. • The indications are that Jit. Malcolm will, receive Jhe position. From what can be gathered, it seems that the question of North aifd Sputi has bad to bo taken into consideration in' connection with this appointment. -]Last year .the, Chajrmanship was held by a northern •member/ whilst the Speakership was held by'a South Island representative. Now that th? Speaker's chair is filled by a northern member, there is a feeling that the Chairmanship of Committees should go to the South Island to preserve the balance between the two islands. It is rumoured that this consideration is acsountable to some extent for the selection of Mr. .Malcolm, despite the fact that, he is by three'.yeari service the junior of Mr. Alander, who has been a member of the House for ton years, as against -Mr.' Malcolm's record of seven years. It is probabta that notice of motion by which the appointment will be made will be given to-day.
