ANGLICAN SYNOD.
OPENING OF SESSION. Tho third session of tho nineteenth Synod of tho Wellington Diccesa was opened in tho Sydney Street Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. After t.lie usual devotional exercises, the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott) delivered his address, first of all, he drew tho attention of his hearers to two resolutions of tho General Synod hold at Nelson. These referred to the canon regulating the maimer of nominating and appointing pas-tors to parishes and parochial districts, and to the arrangements for tho celebrating of the Marsden Centenary no.xt year. Keferring to the Maori Mission, his lordship said:— "It hais-becn recognised by the. Standing Committee for fyomo time past that the superintendent of the Maori Mission required assistance in his work, and also that a priest should bo in training who might hereafter succeed to the position of superintendent. The difficulty in making this provision was a financial one. I am happy to isay that in January last tho difficulty was removed by the trustees of the Williams Memorial" Fund most generously promising us an annual grant of J2230 for tho two or three years towards stipend and house rout. I havo appointed the Rev. Wilfrid Williams, who came to this diocese on an understanding with my predecessor that ho should eventually take np Maori work. We owe most hearty thanks to tho trustees of tho Williajns Memorial Fund for so generously coming to our aid. I might say it is not tho only help they are giving to this diocese at the present time." With regard to the Diocesan Girls' School, his lordship said that during tho year tho trustees, had enlarged and otherwise ■ improved the school at a cost of ,£2318 10s. 2d. to meet the demand for admissions. Accommodation had thus been provided for twenty« additional pupils, so as to provide for §fty,girls. Tile major portion of the address was devoted to tho Bible-inftchools question. His lordship's remarks on this movement are reported elsewhere. It was decided, on the motion of Mt. E. L. Hadfield:—"That a committee be set up to inquire into the position: of the pension fund with a view to the increase of tho maximum pension (,£100), provided under Clause 9 (c) of the Act to Provide for tho Administration of the Diocesan Pension Fund; such committee to consist of the Rev. A. M. Johnson, the Rev. A. S_. Inncs Jones, Messrs. W. J. Birch, H. Nevins, G. Shirtoliffe, and tho mover." The Synod wall meet again fc-r tho transaction of business at 4 p.m. to-day. EVENING SERVICE. There was a large attendance at tho evening service held in St. Paul's ProCatkdral, those present including tho Bishop of Wellington and most of the clergy and laity attending the synod. The servico. was sung by the Rev. B. I. Sola, and the lessons were read by the Rev. A. D. Stratford and. Mr. J. C. Abbott, B.A. Tho Rev. A. M. Johnson, 1 vicar of. St.- Paul's, preached the sermon, talcing for his text the line, "He saw Simon and Andrew, his brother, casting a not into the sea," from the first chapter 'of St. Mark. Tho matter of his'discourse dealt with suggested TemedKs for the leakages from the Church. Mr. Robert Parker presided at the organ.
