HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
9 A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council wa9 hold last evening. Those present v were: Tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny)/ and Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Clendon, Dawson, Keuipthorne, Meldrum, Clements, Parsonage, and Hodgins. A letter was recedtfcd from the Petone council ro installing automatic pressure lighters and also referring to the necessity for tliG provision of a "booster" in connection therewith, and stating that tho matter had been referred to the Mayor and manager of the gasworks to confer. with the Mayor of Lower Hutt. In re-1 gard to tho same matter letters' expressing satisfaction lyith the system wero received from the Levin, Blenheim, and Inverenrgill Borough Councils. On the other hand tho manager of the Hamilton gasworks wrote expressing dissatisfaction with tho .system, mainly owing to irregular pressure of gas. After some dis- . cussion it. was decided to leave tho matter in : the hands of the Mayor for a report, which he is to submit to tho nest meeting of the council. ° Tho Western Hutt Electors' Association wrole asking permission to plant trees 011 Arbor Day on the council's section adjoining the Alicetown Firo Station.—Granted. In his fortnightly report the engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) stated that the reservoir had been full to overflow between i and ! s p.m. on June 13, and again on Juno 20. 011 neither occasion was any lelkage discovered. This reflected credit on tho maimer in which tho con--creting had been carried out by tho contractor. In regard to other matters, tho engineer went on to say that as soon as a'sufficient quantity of metal had been crushed a start would bo made on tho bridge approaches. The laying of the gas main on King's flood had been completed, but 110 applications for gas had yet been made. The cost of laying tho main had been ,£2lB 13s. lOd. The total number of water connections in the borough to date was 992, and 783 permits had been issued under tho Drainago and Sanitary By-laws. •* . It was decided to write to the district engineer of tho Railway Department informing him that tho railway crossing 011 the' Belmont Road was a menace to public safety, and asking him to 'carry out alterations. Mi\ F. de J. Clere wrote disking tho council to consider the advisability of altering the borough building by-law with regard to tho height of, rooms, and suggesting that the Wellington City Council's by-law (where the height of tho room was specified and not tho height of tho stud) should l>e adopted. Councillor Keinpthorno remarked that Mr. Clere had brought the matter beforo tho council for the purpose of having more modern buildings erected. Tho speaker gave notice to move at the next meeting: "That the building by-law bo so amended as to bring it into line with that of the Wellington City Council." A committee, consisting of tho' Mavor, and Councillors Keinpthome, Ball, Clendon, and Hodgins was appointed to go into the building by-laws.
