POLICE GRAFT."

IN MELBOURNE.

UNLICENSED CAPES RAIDED.

AN UGLY FEATURE.

CONSTABLES? SEEN DRINKING, By Telegraph—Press Aesociation—Copyrifflil Melbourne, June 30. The police caused a flutter early thir morning by making raids on three fash ionablo cafes, which were crowded* bj smartly-dressed women and men. The polico arrested seven waiters or charges of Belling liquor without being licensed to do so. (Eee. June 30, 7.10 p.m.) Melbourne, June 30. The cafe raids were 'carried Out in consequence of certain letters which had been received by police headquarters, supplemented by information obtained by special agents, who participated in the doings in the cafes. They ascertained that large quantities of high-priced unlicensed liquors were consumed on the premises. Tho names of those present in the cafej when the raid took place were secured by the police, and include people of both sexes. The Commissioner of Police states that an ugly feature of the business is the introduction of tho American "graft" system amongst a number of the on duty in the vicip'ity of tho cafes that were raided; When the houseß were being specially watched, these men were seen participating in the feasting instead of doing their duty. Men of that class, said the Commissioner, did not suit him, and there would probably be some vacancies in the polico force in a few days.
