COMPLAINTS DENIED.
THE WANGANUI RIVER SERVICE. Mr. A. Hatrick, proprietor of tlio Wanganui river steamers, Ik-is written to .the chairman of itlie Comnu'ssiou whicli, inquired recently into tho working of the service carried on l>y tho steamers, complaining 'of tho reterences to drinking aboard tho steamers, which are included in the Commission's report. Mr. Hatrick's letter has been fonvaxded to the Prime Minister. In it, ho states, inter alia, that thfl drinking referred to arises from tho fact that eomo liquor is'itaken aboard by passengers at Wanganui, oil the oarly morning trijjs, principally bv Natives going to tangis, and by bushnicn on file down trips. The drinking, Mr. Hatrick adds, only obtains on tho lower readies of the river on up (trips. Tho company has tried every means to stop it, and in fact has written to the polico soliciting their assistance. Tho paragraph on the subject in tho Commission's report, Mr. Ifatrick continues, conveys the impression that tho steam packet licensjs are abused. "If so," ho declares, "then it is not correct. If anyone made itho statement, then I should have had an opportunity of refuting it, and to bo confronted by the person making tho statement."
