SUNDAY CONCERT.

Last ovening Mr. Herbert Bloy, known to tho concert-going public as a. violinist of quality, and the Orpheus malo vooal quartet drew over- 2000 people to their concert in His Majesty's Theatre. This was all the more remarkable as at least two other theatres were seeking favour by methods other than musical. Tho concert was thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. Mr. Bloy played an exhausting programme of oxcollcnt iuumc without tiring, gracing cach number with mtelloctuality, refinement, and no small degree of sympathy. No matter what the character of tn« work may be, Jlr. Illov never loses his rotundity of tone, and whether it was in tho turbulent doub!c-stopi?;<l passages of Wieniawski's eerie "Legcnde, or m the brisk ccccntricsof Sarasato's "Zapateado, tho tone quality was remarkably maintained. The "Legendo" mentioned' waa played witli a wealth of expression very artistically coloured, and carnc-d for tho violinist the heartiest applause. Among the other numbers in which Mr. Bloy excelled were Drdla's "Serenade," Mosikowski's "S:rennta," and the "Humoresque" of Dvorak. Other numbers played were Spohr's "Romance," Schubert's "Avo Maria, "Pcrenata" (f/eoncavallo), Qo.v see's "Gavotte," and a "Gipsy Dance" by Sarasalo. Hy .thin concert Mr. 131oy must have revealed to many who do not ordin aril.v attend concerts the rich store of genuine pleasure to be pained by listening to good music. Mr. Bloy was accompanied l),y his wif'?, who plays correctly, but without animation or sympathy. The Orpheus Quartet—Mews 11. l'liipps, [I. N. 1' Ictcher, It. S. Allwright, ami S. N. Hut ton —art! a capitally balanced four. They sing with taste and expression, and there is good tonal blend and balance. They sang "In Absnico" (Buck), "The Sailor's Song" (Parry), "Kathleen Slavoiirneen" (Crouch), and "Evening" (A. d* Call).
