ATHLETIC SPORTS.

THE RUGBY CODE. THE CHIEF "DRAWS" TO-DAY. The secretary of tho Rugby Union, in thu course of his weekly note, expresses the view tliat visitors to Athletic Park to-day may expect a last, open contest ill the meeting between Oriental and Petone. Both teams have a record tor open play, and in past years some very line games have been seen in their contests. Much will depend 011 the result as far as tho championship is concerned, a loss to either practically putting them out of the running. The football should be all the keener in consequence. At Petone, Athletic play Wellington. The latter team is considered a hard team to beat on recent form, and the leaders may be hard pressed to secure a victory. Next Saturday most of tho cup fixtures will bo suspended on account of the representative game against tho Maori team, which leaves Sydney for Now Zealand to-day.

LEAGUE GAME.

THE ATTRACTION THIS DAY. To-day Athletic meet Newtown on Newtown Park at 3 o'clock. Athletic have been greatly strengthened by J. Parker (late of southern Rugby) who jlayed his first game last Saturday, and they aro fairly confident of victory.- Mr. T. Cunningham, of Auckland, will control to-diy's game. A large attondanco of the public is looked for. Admission is free.

Tho tournament at tho Town Hall on Thursday next promises to bs ono of tho most important ever _ promoted by the local Boxing Association. In "Hock" Keys will be seen one of tho cleverest exponents Australia can boast of. Sinco his arrival here large numbers havo attended his training qunrters, and his wonderful work has pleased everyone. Keys visited Wellington in 1905, when he defeated Tracy, and thoso' who saw his work on that occasion .will.be keen on again seeing him in action. ' Comparing him then and now, thoso oompetent to judgo who have seen him are of opinion that the visitor is just as clever, if not more so, than seven years ago. Ho has since defeated nearly all tho leading men of note in Australia. In Hagerty ho will meet a particularly good man, who has an exceptionally good record as an amateur and as a professional. ,The booking plan opened on Thursday morning, and the booking to date is a record for any local contest.
