"PAID FOR INIQUITY."
HOSPITAL MATTERS. JJalluro of many people treated in public hospitals to pay their fees was referred to yesterday, when, a deputation from local bodies was in conference with Dr, Valintme, Chief Hoaltb Officer. Dr. Valintine said, among other things, that it was only a matter of time when tho honorary medical staffs would say that they mere not prepared to treat people who could afford to pay ordinary fees, and then tho hospital boards would have to have stipendiary medical officers. Ho would be very sorry to see tho honorary staff give up tho work) because ho thought that tho public was particularly well served by them. Messrs. P. Holdswortli (Mayor of Onplow) and F. T. Moore (chairman of th« Makara County Council), expressed tlie opinion that tllie institution should not bear tho cost 6f tlno treatment of olcoholisni and venereal diseases. Mr. Moore said that people should bo made to nar for tho consequences of their own deliberate acts, and that the monoy paid in the treatment of such casw as lie had mentioned was money paid for iniquity.
