Palmerston,' June 25. , At 9.30 to-night two local residents discovered in one of the Square reserves a /man suffering violently from the effects iof poison. The in(vn was then uncon'gcious, A doctor and the police were to the scene, but the man died-in-about half an hour. .He had apparently" taken the whole contents of a. small .'little of lysol and then laid down on the Wt'to'die... On searching the clothes tho .'police found that deceased' 3 name was T. Gilligan, but 110 other details were as- , oertained. Ho was aged about 35 years. OLD MAN'S STRANGE ACT. Christchurch, June 25. An old man named Francis Purse, Ci) years of age, was admitted to tho hospital this afternoon suffering from cuts, selfinflicted. The affair took place in the public gardens, to which the old man was almost a daily visitor. He had been in low spirits lately, and suffered from hallucinations, and this afternoon took it into his head to hack himself about with a penknife. He inflicted a nasty wound 111 his wrist, and cut himself about in other ways, losing a considerable quantity of blood in the process. A WOMAN'S DEATH. An inqus.?t will be held to-day touching che death of Emma Hastings, 5G years of a<»e, who was found dead at No. 2a Lome Street, on Tuesday -night. Shortly after 11 o'clock last evening a man named Arthur Sheelian, who was staying at the People's Palace, in Cuba Street, was. admitted to the hospital suffering from a wound in his throat.
