BUILDING TRADE.

! THE OUTLOOK A BRIGHT ONE. ■Within a few weeks now the building trade in Wellington is expectcd to brighten up, and continue for the rest of the winter, according to inquiries mado yesterday.. The conditions at present - time are very gqod, though not comparable with the) experience of five or six Jrear£j ago, . . ; ■ • Contractors are at present awaiting opportunity to tender for the first section of the new House of Parliament, for which the quantities are now .being, cot Ollt by a-skilled quantity surveyor. This is the method usually followed in Australia, but one which is rarely adopted in tho Dominion, where a contractor is ■expected to work out his own quantities for the purpose of compiling his tender. The House of Parliament will be a long job, and this should keep a largo number, of tradesmen, bricklayers, stone-masons, and carpenters going for a'couple of years at least. It is not likely that tile tenders will close soon enough for much work to bo done during the winter months, but tho spring should see the work well in hand, . . . Among the new works in view in Wellington is a new four-story building, and }>ig garage for A Hatrick and Co., to be ■erected on the site of the Unjcn Company's Tepair yards on the corner of Wakefield Street and Lower Taranaki Street; and a picture theatre and skating rink to be built at the corner of Charlotte'and Svdney Streets. Thero is also talk of a' large building being erected oil a site in central Willis Street for a new firm. A start will shortly be mado with a new building (to-be erected by the Barber trustees) on tho now vacant site in Willis Street, adjoining Cooper's building. Messrs. Moncrieif and Young, ironmongers, of Customhouse Quay, have secured the shop accommodation in the aqw building.
