A GRUESOME FIND.
SKELETON UNEARTHED. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent,l Auckland, Juno 23. An interesting, if somewhat gruesome, find, in the shape of a human skeleton, was made recently by some workmen, wlio were excavating on the Exhibition grounds in tho Domain. Tho contractor (Mr. Pearco) wished to fill up a rather deep liolo which has existed for many years on tho top'of tho knoll overlooking tlio cricket ground. Work had been started,, when it was noticed tliat'there wa6 n small hole in ono of tho sides. Somo investigation with a shovel revealed tho wliolo sido of a human skeleton ia a good state of preservation. Tho earth covering tlio rest of tho bones was removed with somo care, whan it was Been that ono of tho anna was folded upon tho chest, tho other being stretched at right angles to the body, which was apparently that of a Maori. Tho 1 >01109 woro transferred ns reverently as possible to tlio bottom of the largo pit, but the skeleton fell to pieccs in tho process. It was covered again with earth, but Mr,Pearce says that ho is quito prepared to disinter it if any museum or scientific institution should express a desire tc. own it.
