SUNDAY MUSIC.

AFTERNOON ORGAN RECITALS. Dr. W. Kington Fyffe, organist at St. Peter's, has offered a suggestion to hii Worship tho Mayor for the improvement in tho attendances at organ rccitals given under tho direction of tho City CounciL With others, Dr. Fyfl'o deplores the poor attendances of the public to these re citnls. Yet the position is really very., little different to that obtaining elsewhere —even in London and Manchester, where tho best organists are to bo found, the attendances are sparse. Indeed, the modern idea of providing purely con-, cert numbers in the form of transcriptions of the operas, dance music, and popular fantasias "(which organists of fiftyi years ago would have considered improper or at least infra dig to include in .a recital programme), is tho outcome of an attempt to populariso the grand organ, and ill a measure it has succeeded. Tho public doss not wish to listen incessantly to Bach, Beetlioven, or M clu 'clssohu, flawless though their musio may be. As a recent, visitor from London (musical writer for thO/ "Daily/'Telegraph ') said: "You cannot'educate the' public if tlio public is not there to bo educated. It is a long uphill journey in a new country to train tho public to a proper appreciation' of the great masters. 'In the meantime make youir programmes largely popular— give them what they want—then gradually work in your good stuff here and there, lint never too much of it. That will whet their taste, and later they will clamour for only the best." To return to Dr. Fyffe's suggestion. It is that the weekly recitals during tho winter bo hold on Sunday afternoons, instead of Saturday evenings, when half the people aro employed in town. This suggestion was forwarded to Mr. Luke in a letter. Tho Mavor is inclined to agreo with Dr. Fyffe, who has offered to give tho first Sunday afternoon recital should the council approve of the ideal The matter will conio 'before tho council on Thursday- evening.
