THE GREY SEAT.
CAMPAIGN OPENED IN EARNEST. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Hokitika, Juno 20. The Greymouth by-election campaign was opened in earnest last night by tlio organisers of tlio federation of Labour. Professor Mills, during his speech in tlio interests of the Labour candidate, roundly criticised the Liberals. Inter alia, he said, "the party for which Mr. Han nan 6tood was the Liberal party, and this party was bereft of policy, and really did not know what it stood-for. The Liberal party had agreed upon an educational campaign of literature, but this had to bo abandoned, because only two so-called Liberals could agree to the literature to bo issued. If they voted for tlio Liberal party tlioy would bo voting in tlio dark, in tlio manner of tho Greymouth newspaper that had pledged its. support to a candidate', irrespective of his policy. Mr. H. L. Michel will mnko a definite announcement to-morrow. . His action in showing no undue haste in rushing in to offer himself as a candidate for the position so recently caused by death, is being favourably commented upon.
