A peculiar position appears to exist at Auckland in connection with tlio receipt and dispatch of wireless messages. Although there is an np-to-dato wireless plant operated from the roof of the post office, tho Marconi operators on steamers trading to tho New Zealand const frequently complain that they are unable to get conncction with tho Auckland station. When tho complaint was forwarded, to tho station recently, it was stated' in explanation that tho' configuration of tho land about Auckland was such as to niako tho post office site unsuitable l'or shortdistance work. It was learned oa inquiry this afternoon, lbowover, that tho station is open for work only at odd intervals during tho day, and that, from 8 o'clock in the morning, ihero are 110 operators on duty. It is well known amongst those interested in. wireless telegraphy that tho conditions for work are ut their best between,9 p.m, and, 4 a.m. Tho hours during, wliich tho station is open are as follow:—From G a.m. to 8. a.m., 3 a.m., to 11 a.m., 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Operators on Homo vessels who make tho complaint' of inattention aro evidently quite unaware that the station is not open continuously for business. It is pointed out also that the station is of Httlo use in case of a mishap at sea if tho wireless call for assistanoo cannot bo received at any how 1 , of tho day or night. TALISMAN MINE FATALITY. Auckland, June 19, A' sequel to the fatal accident which' occurred in the Talisman mino on March 28, when W. Hydo and T. M'Brido wero killed, was heard at tho Paoroa Warden's Court to-day by Mr, F. J. Burgess (wan den). * . M. Paul (mining inspector) proceeded against tho Talisman Company, and J. Rickard (mine manager) who wore charge ed (1) with failing to comply with the mining inspector's instructions to post notices in all chambors of tlio mino prohibiting any men from riding in tho skip 9; (2) failiiiß to test tho rope used, in the ekip when it was first put in, end failing to have it tested every, thrco months as required by tho mining ,rogu- • lations. All tho offences wero admitted.' Mr. Moresby, who appeared for tho min- ' ing inspector, stated that tho inspector said that ho had notified tho mino man*, ager regarding notices, but ho bad al*'lowed some mon to rido on tlio skips, Ho naked that a heavy penalty bo inflicted. Tho warden convicted and Cued the mino manager ,£lO on both chargcs, and' ordered him to pay the costs of tlio prov, cecdings. The charges agaiust tho com-*' pany were withdrawn. DARING GANG. OPERATING IN CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, June 19. Tho tobacconist's shop of T. Good, in Manchester Street, was entered by burglars last night, and goods valued at JE2S stolen. Burglars broke into tho premises of J, N. Withers, storekeeper, Southbrook, last night, and removed a largo safe into tho back yard, and put it on a pony, trap belonging to Withers. Tho pony failed to draw tho load, and they borrowed another horse, and took tho saf« some distance away, and dynamited it. Tho cash profits of their labour amounted to £5 2s. 3d. \ BERESFORD STREET SCHOOL. DAMAGE BY FIRE. Auckland, Juno 19„ A firo broke Cut to-night in the Beres* ford Street School, a wooden otructuro and one of the largest schools in the city. Although the flames had a good liold when, the brigade arrived, the firo ( was confined mainly to the roof. Tho' whole school was flooded, and considerable damago resulted, especially to the ceilings. The exact amount of damage if not yet known. THRESHING MILL MEN. Christchurch, June 19. Tho Arbitration Court has given its award in tho disputo between tho Woi* mate threshing mill workers and the South Canterbury Threshing Mill Owners' Union of Employers. Tho hours for stook threshing were fixed to be between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., and for stack threshing to 1)0 between tho hours of 6.30 a.m. and 7.30 p.m., but in 110 case was work to be done by artificial light except through accident or illness. 'the number of hands to be emplqjed,oil a 'working mill shall consist of driver, feeder, threo stackmen, three bagmen, ono straw man, and ono waterman. All hands except tho driver or feeder shall be paid one shilling per hour, and found. Drivers, feeders, and cooks aro exempted from the operation of the award. Iho scope of tho award is limited to the South Canterbury district, and shall come into force from January 1, 1913, and coutmua till December 31, 1915. CRIMINALS SENTENCED. Hamilton, Juno 19. In tho Supreme Court Samuel Braim aged 24, and William Henry Adams, aged. 19, wn-s convicted of horse-stealing at Cambridge. Brain wns sentenced to ia mouths' reformative treatment. Thompson,, Payne, and Co., a, claim for JCI93 9s. 9d. in respect of postago on films, and .£5273 6s. 8d damages in respect of alleged breach of contract. Tho statement of claim set out that the defendants had agreed to take b"PPl;ea of films from plaintiffs for their Napier and Masterton Uses at JSS and £10 respeetivelj;, tho contract being binding top three years.

FATE OF TUG TOANUI. Gisborno, June 10. Tho fate of the Gisborne tug Toanulv and tho delay arising in connection.' witli the vessel being reported, is occasioning no little anxiety. William Lancaster, aged CO, sued for a divorco from Ada Lancaster, aged HO, oil the grounds of lior misconduct with Alfred J. M. Symon*. The parties live at Pvrongia, siiitill settlement 30 ihilos from 'Hamilton, and misconduct was admitted by respondent and co-respondent. The jury awarded .£230 damages against Symons. BRIEF MENTION.
