Mr. John Briton, a one-time prominent New Zealand railway contractor, is dead. [Mr. Briton was a native of Scotland, and emigrated to Auckland when that city was in its infancy. He was one of tho first men on the Thames goldfields, in 18G7, and was associated with some big mining enterprises there, nis firm laid tho foundations of "tho Big Pump," a concern which was installed to drain the mines at Grahamstown, and also built several of the large crushing mills on tho Thames. Mr. Briton then moved back to Auckland, where he carried on some very large contracts. About 30 years ago ho settled in Sydney, and in various parts of New South Wales he carried out many important railway bridge and other contracts.] RIGHT HON. JAMES BRYCE. Cape Town, Juno 18.
