ONE DAY'S WORK: TWO DAYS" PAY.
1 INTERESTING CASE AT WANGANUI, (By ToloETaph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanijanui, Jun6 18. Trouble occurred with the crew of the steamer Putiki to-day, owing to their desiro {or two days' pay in return for ono day's work, and 'in obedience fo tho command of Mr. W. T. Young, secretary of tho Seamen's Union at Wellington, tho men refuse to turn to till fresh articles Gro signed. It appears that the crew's articles have expired and tho men wero signed oft 10-day; but, before starting under a now agreement, thoy required another day's pay if the steamer went to sea to-day, or else thoy would not sign on and take her away until to-morrow, This, they claimi is a universally recog. nised practice, and though they arc already paid up for to-day, they say that tor thorn to go to sea oil tho same day would be giving a day's work for nothing. Captain AVahlstrom states that tho articles mado ■Wellington tho terminal port, and hold pood for six months, or until tho vessel arrives back there. To savo trouble it was decided to take out fresh articles in Wanganui. The men, therefore, wero signed off at ten this morning, and paid right up till five p.m. As soon as they were, signed off the men stipulated for another day's pay, and refused to turn to till they get it, and there the matter tested, up till this evening.
