6 SUGAR-GROWING IN QUEENSLAND. ■5 By Tclczraph—Press Association— Copyright (Rec. June 17, 8.40 p.m.) Brisbane, June 17. The Queensland State Parliament has been opened. The Governor's Speech indicated that a Bill would bo immediately introduced to mako the sugar-growing manufacturing in Queensland a "white labour" industry. The Bill will further provide that the growers will receive a direct amount equal to the excise duty vrhich is to bo abolished, withotft deduction in respect of any lien upon their crops, or of any other encumbrance.
Other measures foreshadowed include a Bill to raise a loan for the purpose of retiring several existing loons. The report of the Sugar Commission recommended, inter alia, the prohibition of coloured labour, and the abolition of the 6ystem of bounty and excise payments. The majority report was based on adherence to the. White Australia. policy.
