THE SECOND EXPRESS.
ONE TRAIN SUFFICIENT. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, June 13. A further letter from the Minister for Railways (the Hon. W. H. Herrics) in regard to the question of the second daily Main Trunk expresses was read at a meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Tho Minister, writing in regard to the suggestion that the second express train should bo reinstated on at least certain days of the week, said that tho inquiries mado go to show that-no difficulty has been experienced in handling the traffio by tho ono express train each way per day, since tho second express has ceased running. In the circumstances he regretted that tho request .could not be acceded to, and tho question would require to stand over until tho spring. The president (Mr. S. 0. Nathan) stated that, all that could be donp in tho matter at present had been done, and no further action could be taken until tho arrival of tho newly-appointed manager of railways. Mr. E. Anderson 6aid that it was nonsensical to expect tho second train to pay. when it was put on for only about three months in the year. In order to ensure a fair trial it should be run for 12 months. The president said that when the bain was put on again in. tho spring an endeavour might be mado to induco the Department to continue it for a year at least. Tho matter, ho said, would not be lost 6ight of.
