1 PILLAGE & THE TRAP. DETECTIVES* RUSE ON STEAMER. OFFENDERS CAUGHT. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, John Charles Gandry, Thomas Quinn, and Emll Megean were charged with having stolen (from the steamer Panaroa) tour scarves, one pair of glove.!, and five pairs of stockings, belonging: to tho Now Zealand Shipping Company. The theft wa3 said to have been committed on June 6, while tho vessel was lying at Wellington wharves; and tho valuu of the goods was set down as -CI 13s. 6d. Mr. P, W. Jackson appeared for tho three defendants. Quiun'aud Gandry, lie said, pleaded not guilty, and Megeun admitted having stolen tho scarves. The Court entered Megeau's plea as "not guilty.'Evidence was given by Detectives Kawlo and Cameron to the effect that they had concealed themselves in the cold-air trunk of the ship, and had watched the accused through small slides. Detective Hawlo stated that he had seen Gandry lift a portion of tho broken lid of a case and take up some stockings, which he banded to Quinn, who hid them inside the socks ho was wearing. Megean then came.along, and, remarking in broken English, "What have you got here?" went to a case and took some scarves out of it and put them inside, his shirt. Quinn also took stockings out of a case. When tho accused (among others) were informsd that detectives were aboard and were going to search the workers, Quinn (according to Detective Cameron) dumped some of the stolen property overboard. A small boat was procured, and the goods were recovered. • After evidenco had been given by the defendants, who denied that they had committed theft, except that Megean made tho admission alluded to by his counsel, his Worship decided that convictions must bo entered. Gandry was fined .£3, Quinn £i, and Megean £i, and each was ordered to pay .£1 ss. 2d. costs. The default in Gandry's case was fixed at H days' imprisonment, and in the cases of the other two at 21 days' imprisonment. The three were allowed till 10 o'clock this morning to pay the fines. HOTEL SERVANTS. John Thomas Levett, licensee of tho Adelphi Hotel, was charged by tho Inspector of factories with having employed Ct. N. Perry, Miss J. Miles, and Miss J. Dineham alter 2 o'clock in the afternoon on tho day of tho recognised half-holiday in the week ending May 17. Levett pleaded guilty to all the charges, but stated that he had paid the hands for the time they worked. Ho had omitted to notify .the. Labour Department that lie was working the employees solely because ho was not aware that it was necessary to. 'do so..

The inspector remarked that when employees were worked oil a half-holiday they had to bo given a wholo holiday in the following week. Levett was fined 10s., with costs .£1 Is.

RULES OF THE, ROAD.. Tor having driven vehicles at' wore than a walking pace_ across street intersections, William Dulien, Bernard Langman, James Moncricff, Thomas Perham, Clarence Perry, Frederick Smith; and Reuben Tiso were each fined. 55., with costs Vs. For having driven vehicles in Riddiford 'Street without' lights, William Crawford was ordered to pay Court costs 75.; Reginald Duck was fined 55., with costs 75.; and John Physick was fined 55., with costs 7s. William Sweeney was fined 10s., with costs 75., for having left a vehicle unattended iu Adelaide Road. MUNICIPAL BY-LAWS. William Turner was fined 55., with costs 75., for having ridden an unlighted bicycle in Adelaide Road after dark. As the persons responsible for stock which was found wandering at large, Edie May was fined 10s., with costs lis. ; Michael M'Cartin, lQs., with costs 95.; E; Perkins, 10s., and 75.; Walter Hadley, ss. ,and 75.; and John Reginald Welsby, JOs. and 7s. As'the person responsible for a chimney which caught fire, Elizabeth. Hutcheson was convicted and discharged. It was stated that she had just gone into the house, and that the room in which was tlio chimney concerned was at tic time of the outbreak lot to another person. OTHER CHARGES. On a charge of insobriety, Kathleen Hood was fined .-62. Thomas Mahony .and Walter Sim were charged with having, at Johnsonville, tlirown missiles to the danger of property. It was stated that they had thrown 6toncs at houses. Mahony was ordered to pay Court costs and to make restitution, and Sim was ordered to pay Court costs.
