LACROSSE.

[Br Goal Umpire.]

NOTES ON THE CLUB PLAY. Kelburne and Wellington. The continuance of fine weather on Saturday last brought a goodly ■number of lacrosseiirs to the Basin Reserve to commence the second round of tho Proud Cup fixtures, and it was pleasing to note that each team had' its full complement, consisting of the old players and some promising new ones. The result of the Kelburno-Wellinglon match, although disastrous to Wellington, was no more than could have been expected, as Kolburne have secured tho services nf E*conrt, one of Wellington's best stick handlers, who, backed by Hutton and Jones, comprise a, very strong attacking force. Their defence also is very strong, nnd,.if a little more combination between defence and attack is brought into play, CnniW will have to look to their laurels. Wellington, as usual, played a plucky game, but it was evident that from tho commencement Kolburne were out to win. It is a very much open question as to whether it is good policy, while lacrosse is in its infancy, for a strong team to run over a weaker, as Kelburne did; it makes the younger players in the beaten team rather indifferent as to whether they turn up on Saturdays. , Hnlligan and Pugh, with Jones and Hutton. played well for the winners, while Firth and Ryder played a good "amc for the losers, as also did Rotintreo and Stephens, both of whom ore promising new players.

Colombia and Capitol. the Colonibia-Capitol match, this could not be classed as a good exhibition as both teams seemed over-eager to win.' Capitol drew first blood by a welldirected shot of Hubbard's, which found the net in the first quarter. In tho second quarter tho Black trio opened out on several occasions, and, after a great deal of give-and-take play, Grant, by a good run-in, equalised the scores. A conspicuous thing was tho lack of combination on the part of Colombia, and, if Casey wants hi" team to head the list at tho mid of the soason, ho had better havo them out in the mornings for practice. In the third and fo'nrth quarters, neither team scored, and tho match, which ended in i driw, was o>'<> of the .closest played in Wellington. The defence players on both sides held their own, both teams marking and clearing well.

The Cry of "Body Him!" Of th» games themselves a geat deal cmild bo sm'd. but ono or ivo funeral remarks is all that is necessary at present. One hears the cry all over the ground, "Rndv him!" Let me point out Hint this is not lacrosse. In fact, it is an infrv.nge'Seiit of the rules, and I will give right lere the definition of the body check as set down by the New Zealand Association-. "Body chock is the placing of one's bodv in the way of nn approaching nno'oncnt, so rhat the latter is simply impeded. No checker shall use force m ho hody check. Charging or shouldering from behind as well as from tho front implies motion and unnecessary fnrco in checking, and is forbidden. The object should he to play tho ball and not tho man." Tn view of the foregoing, plovers will «.„that. bv bodying a man, they lay themselves open to caution by the referee ™l if Kelbuvne's captain would point 0 t to lu« 'Icffuco that it is not the game, n u wro ptavnrs will be "aid out." Also !° 0 "ck that U used groat v is the upper--1 ,it and referees should particularly 1 wnt'ch for this, as it is a most dangerous nnnlioe, and should be stopped, as it may lead to a serious accident.
