THE W.C.T.U. AND BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
Sir—ln your issue of Friday, Mrs. M Caw, of the Hutt, informs the public in regard to the W.C.T.TJ. Convention that "many of the delegates confessed their ignorance of the working of tho Nelson system, and asked for information. The result was that a large number adjourned to a local clergyman s and made inquiries and spent some time 'in examining the schomo, which has been carried on for over 18 years. On submitting their report to the conference, the resolution was framed, and the platform of the league condomned, and that of the Nelson system adopted." Herein Mrs. M'Caw thinks that sho exposes the genesis of the convention's Bible-in-Schools resolutions, while sho only exhibits her complete ignorance of the facts of the case. The clergyman in question gets honour which is not his due, and disrespect is shown to tho intelligence and ability of those who moved and splendidly carried the two motions. Mrs. M'Caw's statement is top and bottom incorreot. The clergyman concerned is certainly not under any obligation to disclose to Mrs. M'Caw what took place in his private residence, but ho has no objection to admit that a number of ladies came to his house after the convention had finally closed its' sittings, and perhaps he was at liberty, without consulting Mrs. M'Oaw, to give tho information asked for. The clergyman's only Tegret was that he could not accompany the delegates to their respective branches to help them to defend their altogether wise resolutions against the unfortunate ignorance of some of their sisters.—l am, r JAMES H. MACKENZIE. Nelson, May 26, 1913. [We regret that this lotter, with othors, has been delayed in publication.]
