Old Naumai has been very proppy the last day or two, and his projected trip to Hastings mayNhave to bo cancelled. Further evidence of tho popularity of racing in this country is evinced by tho record nominations received by tho Gisbbrne Club for its winter meeting. Many of tho leading steeplechasers aro entered and two prominent "flat" horses engaged aro Multiply and Fort William. Tho latter has not won a race for over two years, but ho gave signs of returning to form at Ellerslio last week, when he ran second to Haskayne in tho York Welter.
C.- l'ritehard was in town yesterday completing arrangements for shipping Gay Lawless to Sydney by th« Willochra, which leaves this evening. The black mars has been something of a failure hero, but it is expected that.the better going at Randwick will suit her. The Trentham horses ■ engaged _at the Hawko's Bay meeting will bo railed to Hastings on Monday. In connection with the Wellington stceplechaso meeting, owners should remember that nominations for all events (except the Trial Plate) close on Friday, June 20. Gapon is the only Duncdin horse entered for the Niw Zealand Cup, and Sol-' diers' Chorus is the solo representative from Southland. Two past winners of the New Zealand Cup—Vice-Admiral and Midnight Suitt— are .nominated for this year's race. llumour was current in the city yesterday that Lcolanter would not be a runner at l 'the Hawke's Bay meeting.. Colour is lent to this by the tact that he is not Engaged at Napier, which meeting closely follows the Hastings fixture. Tho gelding had three races at Ellerslie, and his owner may therefore be of the opinion that a slight "let up" will benefit liim. At A. meeting of the South Canterbury Jockui "Club held last week, the secretary (Mr. J. Fraser) was voted a bonus of 20 guineas. In returning thanks, Mr. Fraser stated that he had been ten years in tho service of tho club, and during that time the turnover had increased l'rom i£7COO to £15,000. . Ivaweon was offered for sale at Auckland last week, but was passed in at 300 guineas. At Masterton last week the Sir laddo mare Alecto was examined by Veterinary Surgeon Crossley, and ho expressed the opinion that the cause of the mare's recent lameness was in tho fetlock, awl stated that 6he would soon grow out of tho trouble. She is already almost quite sound, and will bo put in work shortly, in view of early spring engagements. Sir Arthur Guinness, late. Speaker of the Houso of Itepresentatives, t<vk a keen interest in racing, and was president of several clubs on the West Coast. Tho late member for Grey was a prominent figure at Trentham during session time. From Masterton comes news of tho death of the thoroughbred stallion. Tho Workman, who was injured while -running in the paddock, and in consequence had to be destroyed. Penalties varying from .£2O to .£2OO, with power to withdraw trainers' licenses •in tho last resort, for administering stimulants to horses were imposed by regulations adopted at tho annual meeting of the French Steeplechase Society. Tho responsibility- is thrown on tho trainer in every case in which it is proved that' a horse ran -under the influence of a stimulant illegally administered. Horses with respiratory tubes will bo debarred from racecourses controlled by the Bociety.
