_ Tho only Ministers absent from town today will be tho Hon. A. L. Herdman, who is on his way to Greymouth, tho Hon. R. H. Rhodes, who is at Wanganui, iind may return this evening, and the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, who will make a flying visit to Martinborough, The Hon. Jas. Allen will leave for Christchurch and Dunedin on Saturday evening, and the Hon. W. F. Massey (Prime Minister) will go south on Monday evening. By the last English mail Dr. William Beedie, Kimbolton, received notice that he had taken his M.D. degree, Aberdeen University. Tho Hon. A. L. Herdman left for' Greymouth last evening to represent the Government at the funeral of tho late Sir Arthur Guinness, which will take place to-morrow. Mr. Herdman will rotuni to Wellington on Sunday, or early next week. The Hon. R. H. Rhodes arrived in Wang&nui yesterffay after a trip down tho river. Ho received a munbor of deputations, and goes on to New Plymouth to-morrow—Press Association. The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher will leave for Martinborough to-day to open a now municipal building. He will return to town this evening. Sir Robert Stout was a passenper for tho south by tho Maori last evening, Mr. G. R. Irving, a well-known Now South Wales sheep-farmer, is at present visiting Wellington. Colonel Heard, Chief of the General Staff, will take charge of tho Defence Forces of the Dominion during tho absence in England of General Godlcy. Mr. V. R. Meredith, of tho legal firm of Messrs. Meredith and Watson, who has been on a holiday visit to Dunedin, has returned to Wellington. Whilst in Dune3iii ho played the loading baritone part in "Tho Geisha," with tho local Amateur Opera> Company. Tho season was eminently successful.' Mr. Horace Hunt, tho Wollington pianist, will leave for London to-day by tho Athenic. Ho intends to pnrsuo his music studies in Berlin. A Los Angeles paper called "The Rounder," of May 3, states that Mr. J. C. Williamson, head of tho well-known Australian theatrical firm, was dangerously ill on the voyage of tho Ventura from Auckland to San Francisco, the trouble being Briehfs disease, accentuated by heart trouble. On arrival at San Francisoo Mr. Williamson was conveyed to M'Nutt's Hospital, where at last advices he was making a satisfactory recovery. So fickle is tho aged manager's health now that ho invariably travels with a trained nurse.

Mr. J. Currie, of Brooklyn, was judge of the poultry class at tho Hamilton Show last week. Mr. Currio will judgo tlie Asliburton Show this week. Mr. E. Newman, M.P., returned from Australia by tho Ulimaroa yesterday. Mr. T. M. 'Wilford returned 1 to town yesterday from Wanganui. Mr. G. Piatt, of Petone, who has been designer at the Petone Woollen Mills for the past 18 years, and who has accepted an appointment at Parramatta, Now South Wales, was last evening tendered a sendoff at tlie Petone Working Men's Club. During tho evening tho guest was made a presentation by the president, Mr. Cunliffe. Mr. and Airs. Piatt will bo entertained by lady friends this evening, and to-morrow niglit tho stall of tho Woollen Mills are tendering a "social." Tho directors of the Petono Woollen Mills will givo. a dinner in connection with Mr. Piatt's departure at tho Empiro Hotel on Monday evening. Mr.E, J. Harrison, for many years manager in New Zealand for Renter's, is about to retire from the servieo. Ho is boing «nccc»d«d by Mr. George E. B»ker, at one time of the local office, but who has been for some year# stationed in Melbourne. Mr. Baker, who is to take ovor the dntiet of general manager in New Zealand on Julr 1, arrived yesterday from Sydney by tho Ulimaroa.
